The Monarchy, its Meaning and Development in Spain in Recent Times: the Virtues of the King
Main Article Content
Abstract
The article outlines the fundamental notions of Monarchy and the Crown as a starting point to analyse the functions and powers of the King according to our Constitution. More than the King’s functions themselves, here I focus on his virtues. In order to fulfil his functions of moderating and mediating, the King has to have virtues, auctoritas and charisma. An interesting subject which is not much of explored is the one concerning the messages of the King, especially the ones addressed to the Parliament, in which both King Juan Carlos I and King Felipe VI have expressed their political thinking and their functions of moderating and mediating. Last, I study the development of the monarchies of Juan Carlos I and Felipe VI, drawing the attention to the virtues of these two Kings which are, as it is said in this article, regarding King Juan Carlos that he has been the King of all Spaniards and has used the virtues of courage and moderation and regarding King Felipe VI, that he is the King of the nation with the virtues of honesty and seriousness.
