Main Article Content
Abstract
On the occasion of the 100th anniversary of Benito Pérez Galdós’s demise, the Journal of the Cortes Generales opens the Section “Classics of Democracy” with an article that the popular writer and Parliament representative for Guayama (Puerto Rico), Madrid and Las Palmas, published in the 1st Number of the Journal “Alma Española”, the last and most popular of the regenarationist journals edited in Madrid, on the 8th of November, 1903. Its title: “Let’s dream, soul, let’s dream”. Galdós, with an expressive and solemn tone, wishes to leave behind the mortuary spirit that, after the disaster of 1898, had imbued the entire Spanish society. The author longs for “upbringing for our understandings” as good is water for our fields. Learning to discern “what is dead and what is alive within our soul” is any country’s seed for growth.
