On the Parliamentarians in the Legislatures of the Second Spanish Republic
Main Article Content
Abstract
The proclamation of the second Spanish Republic, on April 14, 1931, had, among its first consequences, the modification of an electoral system that contributed notably to the modification of the parliamentary staff in the three legislatures of that period. In addition to the novelty of the electoral system, which prevailed over large electoral districts with the aim of avoiding mechanisms of deference, if not open corruption, was added the appearance of exclusively urban districts, which were animated by the same intentions. The result would be, from the first elections in June 1931, a profound renewal of the parliamentary staff which, given the characteristics of the electoral legislation, was also experienced, although to a lesser degree, in the next two elections. The article analyzes the main characteristics of this renovation.
