Arturo Mélida, architect of the Congress of Deputies: works, projects and attributions
Main Article Content
Abstract
Arturo Mélida was one of the most interesting artists in the last third of the XIXth century. He also served as architect of the Congress of Deputies carrying out a series of works of singular relevance. The purpose of this paper is to review the artist´s previous relationship with the Chamber and, above all, the years he worked as architect, to try to highlight his works and also analyze a possible attribution: the display cabinet for the Torrijos´ letter. In addition, it aims to point out the importance of a document, subsequently approved by the Internal Government Commission, in which he attempted to establish a regime for the position he had been occupying, with the purpose of granting him more autonomy and control over the interventions undertaken in the building.
